More Planet Less Plastic

In the Dominican Republic, one of the main causes of this problematic is the lack of education about the culture of recycling, also the lack of sustainable and ecological politics.  Another consequence is its versatility, durability and low production cost, which makes it attractive for packaging, containers and other products. Which makes its greater production and greater consumption.

"In the case of the Dominican Republic, approximately 88 thousand tons of plastic waste are generated per year, of which barely 22 thousand are managed, the rest being contaminated the environment, the Caribbean Sea and rivers." According to the newspaper Diario Libre in its article published in 2022 by Karina Jimenez. This quote highlights the worrisome situation of plastic waste management in the Dominican Republic. The large amount of plastic generated annually, combined with the lack of proper management, results in serious environmental pollution in the country, including its bodies of water such as the Caribbean Sea and rivers.

Also, after this our floods become dirty and, in many cases, due to floods both material and biodiversity are lost. “Plastic pollution represents for the Dominican Republic "a great barrier" to the proper management of ecosystems and coastal and Marine resources of the island.” Said the deputy minister of coastal resources of the ministry of environment, Jose Ramon Reyes. The deputy minister of coastal resources of the ministry of environment highlights how the excessive presence of plastics creates significant obstacles to the proper management and conservation of these precious natural environments on the island.
